Herbst Palace Historic Monument

Bronisław Komorowski, President of the Republic of Poland awarded the title of Historic Monument to the 19th century buildings of Łódź. One of the monuments honoured with the title is the residence of Matylda and Edward Herbst currently housing Herbst Palace Museum.

President Komorowski handed over the Regulation concerning the recognition for multicultural landscape of the industrial city of Łódź and considering it a Historic Monument to the  Mayor of Łódź Hanna Zdanowska during a ceremony that took place on 17 February in Israel Poznański palace.

- It is with great joy that I award this honourable title as the expression of gratitude for what has been achieved in Łódź in the area of urban regeneration and restoring the beauty of a big industrial city - said the President during the ceremony.

The list of premises awarded with the title of Historic Monument includes factory and residential complex of Karol Wilhelm Scheibler, inter alia, historic 19th century workers tenant houses Księży Młyn, the residence of Matylda and Edward Herbst together with the park, palace currently housing the Museum of Cinematography, former fire brigade facilities and Źródliska Park. Multicultural landscape of the industrial city recognised with the award also encompasses the former Ludwik Geyer factory, the so called White Factory in  Piotrkowska, the present seat of the Central Museum of Textiles, Israel Poznański Palace in  Ogrodowa, housing the City Museum of Łódź, Piotrkowska street together with  pl. Wolności (Independence Square) and two cemeteries: Old and Jewish.

Historic Monument titles have been awarded since 1994. The President may award the title to, e.g., architecture structures, culture landscapes, urban layouts, and defence structures representing specific value to culture. The decision is taken by the President together with the National Heritage Board.

Before Łódź 58 locations were honoured with the distinction. The elite list of Historic Monuments includes, inter alia, the Jasna  Góra monastery, Grunwald battlefield, Elbląski Channel, and urban historic complexes of Krakow and Warsaw.

The Minister of Culture may lodge an application to the World Heritage Committee  UNESCO to enter a Historic Monument into the List of World Heritage.
